In traditional search, you measured yourself by rankings. In AI answers, there’s no ranking - the engine just names a few brands and moves on. So the question becomes sharper: of all the answers where your category comes up, how often is it you the AI names? That’s your share of voice in AI answers, and it’s the single most honest scoreboard for AI visibility.

What share of voice actually means

Share of voice (SOV) is the percentage of relevant AI answers in which your brand is mentioned or recommended. If buyers ask 40 tracked questions across your category and your brand shows up in 12 of the answers, your share of voice is 30% - but that number only means something in context: against your competitors, across specific engines, on specific prompts.

The power of SOV is that it converts a vague worry (“are we invisible to AI?”) into a measurable position you can watch, compare and improve.

How to baseline it across engines

A single check tells you almost nothing. To get a real baseline:

  1. Fix your prompt set. Choose the questions your buyers actually ask - not keywords, full questions - and keep the list stable so week-to-week numbers are comparable.
  2. Run them across every engine that matters. The same question gets different answers on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Claude. Measuring one engine gives you one-seventh of the picture.
  3. Record presence, not just position. For each answer, log whether you were mentioned, recommended, or absent - and who else showed up.
  4. Aggregate into one number per engine, and one overall. Now you have a baseline you can defend.

This is exactly what Monitor does inside Visibility AI: it scans your prompt set across all seven engines and rolls the results into a share-of-voice figure you can trust.

Why your share of voice moves

Once you’re watching SOV, you’ll notice it isn’t static - and understanding why is where the value is:

  • Engines refresh their answers. Models update, and the sources they favor shift. A page that anchored your mention last month may fall out of favor.
  • Competitors publish. A rival earning a strong citation on a review site or guide can quietly displace you from answers you used to own.
  • Your own content changes. Ship a great comparison page or earn a mention on a trusted source, and you can climb fast.
  • New surfaces emerge. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews pull from different places than a chat assistant, so the same brand can lead on one and lag on another.

Because SOV moves for real reasons, tracking it over time matters more than any one snapshot. Trends tell you whether you’re winning or slipping - and which engine and prompt to look at when something changes.

Turning the number into action

A baseline is only useful if it points somewhere. The most productive way to read SOV is by segment: which prompts with real buying intent are you losing, and which competitors are taking those answers? Those two questions turn a percentage into a to-do list - usually a short one, because a handful of high-intent prompts drive most of the value.

If you want your share-of-voice baseline across all seven engines without running the scans by hand, Visibility AI’s free trial sets it up in a few minutes.
